Joseph S. O'Brien is an associate in the Tax Controversy & Litigation practice.  A seasoned attorney, Mr. O'Brien specializes in navigating clients through both civil and criminal tax disputes. With a wealth of experience ranging from representing clients in IRS examinations and appeals to litigating complex tax cases in various courts, including the U.S. Tax Court, District Courts, and Bankruptcy Courts, Mr. O’Brien is well-equipped to handle all facets of tax controversy matters.

Drawing from his extensive tenure in government service, first as a Senior Attorney with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel’s Large Business & International Division and then as a Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, Mr. O’Brien brings invaluable insight into complex audits and litigation strategies. During his time in government, he provided counsel to Revenue Agents on intricate tax issues during the audits of Fortune 100 companies and contributed to national special trial teams defending the IRS in syndicated conservation easement cases.

Since transitioning from public service, Mr. O’Brien has continued to excel in defending taxpayers in civil and criminal investigations, guiding clients through the IRS’s voluntary disclosure program, and representing them in diverse cases involving microcaptive insurance, tax collection, and promoter injunctions.
